Zakat-ul-Fitr (Fitrana)
Zakat-ul-Fitr (Fitrana) is an obligatory Alms that must be paid on every individual in the household. It is meant to cleanse one’s fast; therefore, it should be delayed to the end of Ramadan, but must be paid before the Imam begins the Eid prayer sermon.
According to the Fiqh Council of North America,
The amount of Firtana in the US in 2026 is $10/person
For more information on how the cash equivalent of Fitrana is calculated, refer to this Fatwa on Fiqh Council of North America (https://fiqhcouncil.org/fidyah-and-zakat-al-fitr/)
Fidya
Fidyah is a payment made per missed fast if someone is not able to fast in Ramaḍān, and it is expected that they will never regain the ability to make up for the missed fasts — for example, if they are sick with no hope of recovery. If someone misses a fast due to being temporarily sick or traveling, they would make up the fast at a later date and they would not pay fidyah.
The amount of Fidyah in the US in 2026 is $15/person
For more information on how the cash equivalents of Fidyah is calculated, refer to this Fatwa on Fiqh Council of North America (https://fiqhcouncil.org/fidyah-and-zakat-al-fitr/)
