  • A meeting will be held this Sunday 12/18 3:00 pm at the Assembly of God Church (106 New Park Avenue, Hartford) for immigrant students and families to learn about their rights when interacting with immigration officials.
  • Blood Drive at FVAMC (35 Harris Road, Avon) this Saturday 12/17 9:00 am-2:00 pm. Beginning mid-December, the American Red Cross will have a critical need for blood donations throughout the holiday season. While many regular donors gather with family and friends to celebrate the holidays, and potentially postpone their donations, patients may spend them in a hospital room and still need blood. Please make your appointment today! Go online and use the RapidPass at www.redcrossblood.org/rapidpass and save time. The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime. Thank you for supporting the American Red Cross blood program!

  • FVAMC is proud to recognize four (4) High School Seniors from its Youth program who have achieved the semifinalist status in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.  These young men are Bassel Abdel-baki and Zain Athar of Avon, Yusuf Malik of West Hartford, and Omar Ahmed of Farmington. Also Honorable mention (top 5% nationwide) goes to Qasim Malik of West Hartford.  Mash’Allah – May Allah bless these youth and their families and grant them continued success. Ameen.

Our youth programming resumes this weekend with the first weekly Youth Group on Saturday 9/3 at 7:30p with our new Youth Minister Br. Omar Taweel.

We are elated to announce that Br. Omar Taweel has accepted to serve as FVAMC’s new Youth Minster. Br.  Omar comes to us from Chicago with his wife and their 8-month old daughter. He holds a Bachelor of Liberal Arts & Science in Islamic World Studies and formal training in classical Arabic and Qur’anic Exegesis. He’s pursuing graduate studies at the Hartford Seminary this fall.

Br. Omar served as a Youth Minister at Mecca Center, IL for the past four years, where he was responsible for their youth educational programs, community outreach and interfaith, counseling and mediating, and developing and conducting a mentorship program for aspiring youth leaders. In addition, he taught at Universal School, a full-time day Islamic School in IL, where he designed and implemented a new Islamic studies and history curriculum. He also designed and led programs aimed at the development and empowerment of the youth. Br. Omar served as co-host of YaHala Voice, a radio talk show focused Islamic ethics and consciousness. He regularly leads Friday sermons at mosques, high schools, and universities.

Please join us for FVAMC Academy open house on Friday, September 9th from 6pm to 8pm at FVAMC (35 Harris Road, Avon, CT).  This is a chance for you to bring your children to meet their teachers, confirm classroom assignments, purchase textbooks for the upcoming school year, and pay any outstanding tuition fees.

First day of FVAMC Academy will be on Sunday 9/18/2016 In Sha Allah.

In our efforts to continuously assess and enhance the quality of FVAMC Academy, we have introduced a number of noteworthy measures, which include:

  • Dividing the lower levels to match public school grades pre-school thru sixth grade, with a combined class for 7th and 8th graders and a class for high schoolers.
  • Introducing Arabic and Quran Enrichment program held after the regular session at 1:30-3:00 every Sunday. The class will be taught by Sr. Nour Alnajjar, an experienced Arabic/Quran teacher. Class is optional and open to all registered FVAMC Academy students.
  • Employing paid teachers.
  • New curriculum based on the holistic approach of the Tarbiyah Project.

We are also pleased to announce that the Academy will be led by Sr. Kinda Attasi and Br. Chaker Dridi. Br. Chaker is a Board member and language teacher at Avon High School. Sr. Kinda holds a Master of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and has served as teacher and tutor of English as a Second Language (ESL) and an Office Manager for a number of years.  She’s fluent in Arabic and English. She’s joining us from Chicago with her Husband Mr. Omar Taweel (FVAMC Youth Minister) and their 8 month old daughter. Please join us in welcoming Sr. Kinda and her family.

  • FBI Future Law Enforcement Youth Academy. FBI Special Agent in Charge Patricia Ferrick and Yale University Police Chief Ronnell Higgins proudly announce, the newly created Future Law Enforcement Youth Academy (FLEYA) is now accepting applications. This unique program is designed to promote higher education and give selected youth a peek behind the scenes of the work that FBI conducts with state, local and federal law enforcement partners. Youth from around the state of CT will have an experience of a lifetime as they are exposed and taught various law enforcement techniques, federal and state judicial systems through classroom and practical exercises. This academy will take place on Yale’s campus during the week of July 24th – 29th  and will be comprised of an ethnic and diverse cultural group of youth between the ages of 15 – 18yrs old. All candidates must be enrolled in a Connecticut High School and have a minimum GPA 2.7 to be eligible. Announcement This Week:

On Saturday, January 16 the second annual MLK Day of Service Food Packing Event was a huge success — together we raised $9,650 and many hands volunteered to make 38,600 meals of Mac & Cheese and Rice & Beans! We thank all of you who helped make it happen.

We worked all day alongside of other local faith communities: First Church of Christ, Congregational – Farmington, Memorial Methodist, Avon; Trinity Episcopal Church Collinsville; First Church of Christ, Unionville; Avon Congregational Church, UCC; West Avon Congregational Church; Shepherd of the Hills Church, Simsbury, as well as the Avon Lions Club this year,  Boy Scout Troop 170 and Girl Scouts 66126.Meals were donated to a variety of worthy, local pantries and shelters:  FISH of Torrington, Hispanic Health Council, The Fresh Place pantry, Charity Worker, St. Francis of Assisi, McKinney Men’s Shelter all of Hartford, Grace SDA pantry.
